About Counselling
Counselling and psychotherapy are umbrella terms that cover a range of talking therapies. They are delivered by trained professionals who work with people over a short or long term period to help them bring about effective change or enhance their well being.’ British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.
The overall aim of counselling is to provide you with an opportunity to work towards living in a more satisfying and resourceful way. This delicate process offers a unique and objective relationship that works at your own pace. It offers an opportunity to explore thoughts, feelings, hopes and concerns in a safe, respectful and confidential setting without judgement. Counselling is not about rescuing, but empowering and enabling you to decide what, if any, changes you may wish to make in your life.
Counselling can offer a safe, nurturing relationship and environment within which you can explore any issues of concern both past and present; attain a sense of clarity; develop greater self insight and understanding; change unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaviour; develop improved communication skills; develop more effective coping strategies and more.
What to expect
Our first meeting will be an introductory session during which you will have the opportunity to find out more about me and how I work. It will also provide a chance for you to begin to explore the issues you may wish to bring to counselling, to discuss what you hope to gain from engaging in therapy and to ask me any questions you may have.
Should you decide that you would like to work with me, we will then make arrangements to meet on a regular basis, usually at the same time each week. Sessions last for 50 minutes.
Counselling is a process that requires time and commitment. Many issues can be resolved in short term work, while others require longer term therapy. How many sessions will depend on your personal circumstances. Decisions such as these will be negotiated at the outset of therapy and discussed further during review sessions. Regular reviews will take place to ensure that you get the most from your counselling experience.
Confidentiality
Everything discussed between us is kept strictly confidential. There may be an exception to this if I believe that someone is at risk of serious harm. This will be discussed at our first meeting.
